COUNCIL OF NELSON MANDELA UNIVERSITY STATEMENT ON GAZA

A CALL FOR CEASEFIRE AND JUSTICE

The Nelson Mandela University Council condemns, in the strongest terms, the ongoing violence, death and human suffering in Gaza. The indiscriminate destruction of civilian life, natural resources, healthcare systems, educational institutions, amid the forced displacement of Palestinians and vicious blockades, have devasted people and environment. These actions not only represent grave violations of international law; they mirror deeply troubling and well-documented patterns of violence that evidence genocidal intent and conduct.

We call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the prolonged occupation, allowing unimpeded humanitarian aid, and accountability for all violations of international law. As an institution committed to Nelson Mandela’s legacy of justice, equality, and solidarity with the oppressed, we stand with the people of Palestine in their quest for freedom, self-determination, and peace.

We urge governments worldwide to reject complicity with the Israeli government, act decisively to protect Palestinian lives, and work towards longer-term political stability in the region.

O Conselho da Universidade Nelson Mandela condena, nos termos mais veementes, a violência, morte e sofrimento humano em curso em Gaza. A destruição indiscriminada de vidas civis, recursos naturais, sistemas de saúde, instituições educacionais, em meio ao deslocamento forçado de palestinos e bloqueios cruéis, devastou pessoas e o meio ambiente. Essas ações não representam apenas graves violações do direito internacional; elas espelham padrões de violência profundamente preocupantes e bem documentados que evidenciam intenção e conduta genocida.

Apelamos por um cessar-fogo imediato e o fim da prolongada ocupação, permitindo ajuda humanitária desimpedida e responsabilização por todas as violações do direito internacional. Como instituição comprometida com o legado de justiça, igualdade e solidariedade com os oprimidos de Nelson Mandela, estamos com o povo da Palestina em sua busca por liberdade, autodeterminação e paz.

Instamos os governos em todo o mundo a rejeitar a cumplicidade com o governo israelense, agir decisivamente para proteger vidas palestinas e trabalhar para uma estabilidade política de longo prazo na região.
